New York City: Timothy Cardinal Dolan retirement-resignation was accepted by Pope Leo XIV on December 18, 2025 as per the mandatory age of 75 for retirement. Bishop Ronald A. Hicks from Joliet, Illinois was appointed as the new Archbishop of New York. Timothy Cardinal Dolan has been the Archbishop of New York from 2009-2025 and will be holding his final Midnight Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Christmas Eve; ending 16 years as head of the Archdiocese of New York.
Timothy Cardinal Dolan was someone that was welcoming to all that approached him within and outside the church. St. Patrick’s parade was a great example that Dolan would be standing outside to greet all that participated and attended the parade on Fifth Avenue; always genuine and approachable with a natural smile.
Timothy Cardinal Dolan has served over 2.8 million Roman Catholics in Manhattan, The Bronx and Staten Island and has led mass to churchgoers at the St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Fifth Avenue in NYC. Prior to becoming the Cardinal; Dolan was head of the Dioceses in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Pope Benedict XVI appointed Timothy M. Dolan as the Archbishop of New York in 2009 replacing Edward Cardinal Egan who retired.
